It has been a particularly cold and snowy Winter and Spring, so it was really nice to find moderate temperatures and this northbound coal empty hanging out near Church Ranch Lake on my way in to work.

This southbound HLAUDEN (Laurel, MT to Denver, CO) is about to pass beneath US-36. The train has an ES44C4 on the point. Despite having six axles, only four of them are powered, making this unit an A1A-A1A unit (instead of a C-C unit). The center axles are not powered, but help to disperse the weight of the unit on the rails. So far, only BNSF has ordered these. What's more, EMD will be competing with the C4 by creating their own similar unit. EMDs unit will differ slightly in that their truck configuration will be B1-1B. The unit will be called an SD70ACe-P4 and should be arriving any time.

Note the conductor in the cab, giving a friendly wave!

A southbound manifest is holding short of the Nickel Street grade crossing on the main track in the distance. It is waiting for the rail train rolling down the siding to the right. The rail train just released its warrant. This will allow the manifest to copy a new warrant from the dispatcher to proceed from the south siding switch of Broomfield all the way in to town.

UP 7354 leads a BNSF rail train through the siding at Broomfield. They are meeting a southbound HLAUDEN which is already holding at the Nickel Street grade crossing.

This northbound loaded rail train is passing Church Ranch ... errr ... Lake? Unfortunately, the lake is nothing more than an empty field at the moment!

A northbound BNSF rail train has an unexpected leader! UP 7354 is leading the loaded train on this Sunday afternoon. At some point in the future - not entire clear on when that will be - there will be commuter rail tracks in this shot too.

A pair of great looking SD40-2s switch out the industries located near Miller Street in Arvada along the Golden Sub. These industries include some metal fabricators and packing supplies and a gympsum, fiberboard and lumber plant.

To handle switching out the industries located along BNSF's Golden Sub, a local runs east out of Golden. On this particular day, the local was running with a pair of matched (Heritage) SD40-2s. Looked great in the morning sun and fresh, crisp snow.

Winters in general (and blizzards specifically) are the perfect time to crank out a few black and white shots! This HPVODEN (or QPVDVJ in the UP computer) is nearing the end of its journey.

This is one of my favorites types of shots. The snow flying everywhere! This train held in the siding at Leyden for a couple hours to wait for Amtrak and the MNYRO.

Charging east through the snow, this Provo-Denver manifest is on the (relatively new) Main 2. The track in the foreground is the Arvada Siding, used by UP to interchange coal traffic to BNSF for the Coors Brewery in Golden.

If you are hot, this picture might help to cool you off a bit. The first real blizzard of the 2012-2013 winter season finally hit the Front Range. Here, BNSFs HPVODEN is coming through Arvada (CP DS007) on Main 2 on its way east.

At the west switch of Irondale, this BNSF manifest (with some power-shared UP power) has come to a stop. Here it will wait for at least one eastbound coal load.

This 32-car manifest is slowly rolling toward the east switch of Irondale on BNSF's Brush Sub. The train has a restricting signal heading in to the siding.

Looking underneath the Sheridan Blvd overpass, we see this eastbound Beer Run on the Golden Sub headed toward C&S Junction. Next to the Golden Sub is the new Arvada Siding. Further to the left is Main 2 (with the coal empty on it) and Main 1 beyond that.
