Welcome to ColoradoRailfan.com! Up until noon on March 27, 2007, you would have known this site as drgw.ws. However, due to circumstances beyond my control, I lost the drgw.ws domain name. Life goes on, and for me, it goes on as a new an improved website devoted to Colorado Railfanning with particular emphasis on rail photography. While I gather as many pictures as I can of (remaining) Rio Grande units (as Rio Grande will always be my favorite!), I also have many pictures of contemporary roads (such as Union Pacific and BNSF), typically on former Rio Grande rails, but not always.
Palmer Railfan Meet
|
April 19th at 10:00am at Palmer Lake, CO
It's almost that time again. After surviving another cold winter, Mike and Lee are working on organizing another railfan meet. This one will be held at the north end of Palmer Lake in mid-April. The Depot restaurant is located in town, so if you are feeling hungry, you can drop by and get something to eat.
As always, dress according to the weather as this is (obviously) an outdoor event!
For more information, contact Mike at mikek42@comcast.net or Lee at lr_trains@yahoo.com.

UP 6936 Comes Through Colorado News Story Posted By Kevin (Click Name To Email) April 15, 2008 - Today UP ran its officers special (symbol: SGJSS-14) across the state from Grand Junction, CO to Sharon Springs, KS. It is part of a near 3-week-long sprint across a good portion of UP's system.
Those on the train can observe the tracks and presumably the traffic along the system as the train goes. As an added bonus, UP 6936 was the sole power for the train. UP 6936 is the only active DDA40X on the rails today. It is nearly 100 feet in length an an impressive site to see.
Many railfans took the day off work to chase the special from Grand Junction east. For reasons I haven't yet figured out, I didn't take the day off and could only get a few shots in between Blue Mountain and Leyden. Here are the shots I took this afternoon.
The train descended the Front Range between (roughly) 12pm and 1:30pm on its journey east. After a quick crew change in Denver, it was off to the Limon Sub (the KP Line) to continue eastward.

Webmaster, ColoradoRailfan.com UP 6936 (DD40AX) Coming Through Town News Story Posted By Kevin (Click Name To Email) April 14, 2008 - The sole-remaining (active) DD40AX, UP 6936, is coming through Denver tomorrow (Monday, April 14th) on a passenger special that has been touring the entire UP system.
The train ran today (Sunday, April 13th) from Pocatello, ID to Grand Junction, CO, arriving in Grand Junction very late - about 20 minutes before this post, shortly after midnight. The train is scheduled to be called at 05:00 tomorrow morning at Grand Junction for the next leg of the trek east to Sharon Springs, KS. Current estimates have the train coming through the Denver area between 12:45pm and 1:45pm. That is of course subject to a LOT of change! Alaska Railroad GP49's Come Through Denver News Story Posted By Kevin (Click Name To Email) March 15, 2008 - When EMD was working on their 50-series units in the late 1970's and early 1980's, they had four different models available in the catalog. The GP49, the SD49, the GP50 and the SD50. The primary different between 49's and the 50's being that the 49's were a 12-cylinder unit (instead of a 16-cylinder unit) and were rated at 2,800 HP instead of 3,500 HP.
Not a single SD49 was ever produced. However, nine GP49's were produced: four in September 1983 and another five in May 1985. All nine units went up north to Alaska Railroad. There they remained for the next 20+ years until they were retired in 2006. Two of the units, AAR 2805 and AAR 2808, were sold to Specialized Rail Transports in Houston, TX. BNSF transported the units from the Pacific northwest to Texas, via the Front Range Sub and Colorado. Here are some shots of the units coming down the Front Range Sub, DIC (Dead-In-Consist) on the HPASSAG (Pasco, WA to Saginaw, TX) train. As of 2:00pm on March 15, the train was already south of Denver on the Joint Line.
Oh, also thrown in is a single picture of the Ski Train from Friday morning, for good measure! Ouch! EMD 9501 gets a makeover!? News Story Posted By Kevin (Click Name To Email) March 13, 2008 - You may recall that a few months ago, EMD 9501 came through Denver on its way to the Tacoma, WA area. Here are a few shots if you don't recall. EMD 9501 was BN 9501 back in the early-to-mid 1990's. It is one of only four SD60MAC's ever produced. Indeed EMD prototypes for AC traction!
Nobody was really sure why it was going to Tacoma. Some speculated that it might be for a new paint job. Well, that paint job may yet come, but that doesn't appear to be the main purpose for its visit. Check out this photo (posted on railroadforums.com), sent to me by Nathan Holmes (webmaster of drgw.net). It looks like it is somewhere between an SD60MAC and an SD70ACe!?!?
What a curious project! ....

Weekly Featured Picture
Week Of May 11, 2008
I NEVER thought I would again see the day when SEVEN geeps could be found on the point of a train. It happen on this day though, when the Rocky Local was powered by three Espee GP40(M)-2s, three Grande GP40-2's, and a UP GP39-2. Black and white just seemed right for this picture, as it looks like it could have come straight out of the early 1980's!!!
