UP 1989 has earned the nickname the "Vampire Unit" as it typically runs between Denver and Pueblo overnight. However, the Vampire Unit is out playing in the snow on this morning, making a trip on the Moffat to rescue an MRONY stalled out at Tabernash. Less than three weeks away from JUNE and there is more than an inch of snow on the ground! UP 1989 and UP 5894 charge west through the white stuff at Leyden on their way to Tabernash. The rails were slick with snow and the two units on the train couldn't quite get the 4,100-ton train up the 2% grade. So, the train backed into Tabernash and this light power (which includes UP 1989) was sent west out of Denver to rescue the stalled train! They are headed to Denver where they will be auctioned off in July. UP 2888 was born as DRGW 5357. You can tell it is a former Grande T-2 here by the shortened fuel tank. This was DRGW 5411, delivered in March 1980. The unit is headed for retirement at Burnham in Denver. Appropriate, considering the time it must have spent at Burnham over the years. It then lived as UP 8578 before being moved to UP 2900. After 33 years of service, this unit is headed for retirement at Burnham. It was delivered as DRGW 5351 in in October of 1974. It was then painted in Espee colors and fly letters after the Rio Grande / Espee merger. After the Espee / UP merger, it was renumbered to UP 4004 on March 29, 1999. It kept that number for less than a year. It moved to UP 8574 on March 17, 2000 to make room for the SD70Ms. UP then moved it one more time, to UP 2885 on December 20, 2002. Just over seven years later, it is off to retirement.
