Where does the time go? Seems like just yesterday the AC4400CW was one of the newest things on the rails! Now, UP 7008 represents a unit that is nearly 20 years old while the truly newest representative from General Electric, the ES44AC, sits in the siding at Mesa.

In the late 1990's, UP had 10 AC4400CW's on lease from GECX. The units were numbered GECX 4000-4009. The units wore UP colors, but instead of "Union Pacific" on the long hood, they had "GECX". The units were ultimately purchased by UP and put in the roster. They wound up as UP 7000-7009. Here, you can see the number "7" patched on the cab over the "4" on UP 7008.

With the addition of UP 7008, I've managed to shoot four out of the ten ex-GECX units to date.

The MNYRO comes to a stop at the east switch of Fraser. Here, the crew will make a cut and tie down the back portion of the train. Then, two gondolas will be set out on the house track. The hill on the right side of the shot is used for intertubing in the winter. You can also see the ski run at Winter Park in the distance, and even a ski lift atop the mountain in the upper right hand corner.

Amazing to think that trains once ran over that mountain range in the distance! On this fabulous June day, UP's MNYRO pops out of the trees and into the clearing in Fraser Valley.

Each day, UP runs a manifest from North Yard to North Platte, NE. Likewise, there is a counterpart train that runs from North Platte back to North Yard. Here, the MNPNY crosses the grade crossing in Platteville, CO.

This is a fairly unique unit on UP's roster. Note that "Union Pacific" is not spelled out on the long hood, and indeed something else has been covered up. In March 1997, UP took delivery of 10 AC4400CW's that served as warranty protection units. They were in armour yellow, but were lettered "GECX" and were numbered GECX 4000 to GECX 4009. UP purchased the units out right in January 1998 and the units were soon renumbered to UP 7000-UP 7009. By April 2001, the renumbering had been completed. As of this picture, the "GECX" on the long hood was starting to show through once again!
