Just south of the old Gates Rubber plant, a southbound BNSF coal load is moving quickly along on Main 1. Coal empties awaiting new crews sit on both Mains 2 and 3.

It is a beautiful President's Day 2011 as UP's South Local proceeds through a clear signal on Main 1 at South Denver. This is the local where two main tracks go to triple track when heading south.

The crew on this coal load is throttling up, ready to leave the siding of Carr north on a clear signal. The train will have to go as quick as it can up to Speer as the ZLADV will be there before long, ready to head south to Denver. The flat car sitting on the house track to the right has been there for over six months. The car literally broke in two on a work train. It was welded back together (as a temporary fix) and was setup here. UP hasn't gotten around to dealing with it yet. More than likely, the car will be cut up and scrapped right here, on the spot.

After waiting for more than an hour for the (rerouted) California Zephyr to show up at Carr, this northbound coal train is finally ready to continue north toward Cheyenne, leaving Carr on a clear signal. Note the end DPU's starting to shove on the rear of the train.

An Amtrak F59PH, which typically lives in California, is being sent to Chicago on the California Zephyr. I never did hear exactly why it was making the trip back to Chicago, but it made for a nice (and unexpected!) addition to the Zephyr.

The eastbound (geographic southbound) Zephyr is accelerating on the main at Carr. The train is meeting a coal load on the siding behind the photographer. The Zephyr will shortly reached speeds near 75 MPH on its trip south to Denver.

A problem with a bridge in between Provo and Salt Lake City, UT has resulted in Amtrak being rerouted through Wyoming for a few days. Here, the Zephyr is headed south on UP's Greeley Sub at Carr. The lead P42DC does not have cab signals, so UP 4473 was added as a pilot for the trip from Salt Lake to Denver.

The westbound California Zephyr is now the eastbound California Zephyr as it is being dragged back to Denver! Note the red class lights on AMTK 132, indicating this is the back of the train. The Zephyr has a double yellow in the distance at Arvada. It is lined down Main 3 and back into the station in Denver.

Here is something you don't see every day! P42DC #67 is actually pulling Amtrak backwards through Arvada eastbound toward Denver. A rock slide in the Tunnel District made this necessary. The conductor stood in the back of the P42 and spotted the reverse movement for the engineer.

This northbound coal empty is stopped at Crews to wait for a southbound manifest that is currently at Kelker. I thought it was somewhat interesting that there are only three unique numbers between the two units (9992 and 8888).

Prior to the Joint Line being run as the Joint Line, the Santa Fe track crossed over the Rio Grande track just south of Crews. In this shot, you can see the embankment in the top-right corner where the Santa Fe track used to run. The southbound coal load here is staying on Main 1, but the ownership of the rails is changing from Union Pacific to BNSF.
