This shot pretty well sums up the Powder River Basin! A coal load on Main 1 proceeds eastbound (geographic southbound) toward Bill as an empty charges westbound (geographic northbound) on Main 2 toward the North Antelope Mine.

A UP coal load on the newest of the four main tracks (Main 1) approaches the WY-59 underpass. Note that there is a green signal on Main 2 for a westbound (geographic northbound) which has already departed Bill.

It is impressive watching the dispatcher organize all the trains in the Powder River Basin. During my visit, it seemed that westbound (geographic northbound) empties ran on Main 2 (second track from the right) while loads split up the other three tracks. Here, a BNSF load approaches on Main 4 and you can see a UP load approaching three miles in the distance on Main 1.

Just north (or, if you are looking at a timetable, west) of Bill, WY, you will find a spot where all four main tracks pass underneath WY-59. Here, an eastbound UP coal load is about to pass under WY-59 on Main 1. At Bill, the train will get a new crew.

In between Nunn and Carr on the Greeley Sub, this southbound has a clear signal in an afternoon downpour. Even though I'm not too crazy about the aesthetics of the SD70ACe, I am and always been an EMD guy at heart, so I'm thrilled to see if leading!

Not far north of Nunn, the MNYNP charges north amid threats of a summer storm to the west. Save for the fact that the GE's are way too new, this shot harkens back to the 1960's and 1970's when you could find all kinds of crazy mixed power on UP, including DDA40X's and DD35's.

At Lamar Street, you can clearly see the grade work that has been done by UP to facilitate the addition of a second main track. It appears as though this track may converge with the existing track at CP 7.5. The new track will likely be used for holding coal trains that need to be recrewed between Lamar and Tennyson. The new track will allow DS-86 to continue to run trains around the tied down train.

US-85 crosses over the tracks just north of Nunn, CO. The southbound ZLADV is making good time as it approaches the north end of Nunn at close to 60 MPH. The autoracks in the foreground are indeed loaded with new cars. The doublestacks behind those have made the trip from Los Angeles, while the trailers at the end were added in Salt Lake.

Here is a very depressing train! It is known as a "funeral train". It is so named because all but the first three units are heading for retirement. 21 units are headed for retirement. 17 of those units are SD40T-2s.

Halfway between Wagon Mound and Levy, a pair of intermediates stand showing green in either direction. No train will pass through these intermediates again until the eastbound Southwest Chief later in the day. April 10, 2010 was a very unique date indeed as three trains passed through the signals.

This westbound work train passes the semaphore at the east end of Watrous. Note the blade on the semaphore is about halfway between being vertical and horizontal. As the train passes the signal, it is dropping from green to red.

Some of the last-active semaphore signals in the country can be found on BNSF's Raton Subdivision. Both sets of intermediates here are red as a result of the work train that just passed by.

A westbound work train passes by intermediate semaphores near Colmor. Note the blade pointing toward the sky on the left side of the picture. That is a clear signal for this train, and the signal will drop (quite literally) to red as the train passes. After dropping to red, the blade on the left will be parallel to the ground, like the one on the right.
