On Cinco de Mayo, this five-car BNSF Officers Special runs south through the siding at Broomfield, meeting a northbound coal load headed for the Valmont power plant in Boulder.

I have heard the question come up in the railfan community how many siding there are that aren't quite parallel to the main. The siding of Broomfield is an excellent example of this! Not only are the tracks not quite parallel, but they actually lay on two different grades. The HPASSAG (in the foreground) heads south on the main while the HDENLAU (in the background) holds on the elevated siding. It will be interesting to see how much this changes with the introduction of commuter trains along here.

A few weeks ago, the Longmont Turn power consisted of two Cascade Green SD40-2s. Both of those units must have gone in for inspections because this Yellow-Bonnet SD40-2 and New Image ES44AC are in charge now! The light power is headed down the main at Broomfield. Once in town, it'll pick up cars to take back north to Longmont.

A 7000-foot Pasco, WA to Saginaw, TX manifest just received a warrant from the Front Range dispatcher and is now pulling toward the south switch at Broomfield after meeting a northbound Denver, CO to Laurel, MT freight (still visible in the distance).

The siding at Broomfield was originally a part of the CB&Q while the main was part of the C&S. Once it all fell under one railroad (and more and more streets starting popping up in Broomfield), the alignment of the siding became a bit less straight! Here, the northbound HDENLAU is headed north toward Nickel Street while the southbound HPASSAG holds on the main.

One of the few H2 ES44DC leads up the northbound HDENLAU as the train enters the siding at Broomfield. In track warrant territory, all blocks (typically sidings) will have a sign indicating the location.

Not the best shot ever, but it was the only one I had time for on the way to work. An Iowa, Chicago and Eastern (or "ICE") SD40-2 led a work train north up the Front Range Sub. Here, the train is waiting for a southbound that has yet to leave Longs Peak, 35 miles to the north.

The southern end of the Front Range Sub is one of those rare subdivisions where might actually see a northbound coal empty or a northbound coal load! Northbound coal loads head toward the Valmont power plant in Boulder and are pretty common. Coal empties however only come to the Front Range Sub when they are headed for the Powder River Basin and have been re-routed. Such was the case on this day as this PRB coal empty heads north through the siding at Broomfield after a meet.

Near the north end of Broomfield (and Burns Junction), this southbound Track Geometry train slowly heads down the main track. The train is meeting a rare re-routed Powder River coal empty headed north due to track work on the Angora Subdivision northeast of Denver. BNSF 1511 - a GP28M - is looking pretty darn good (and clean!)

The HDENLAU rolls slowly down the siding at Broomfield toward Burns Junctions and the north switch of Broomfield. A rare visitor - a UP SD70ACe - makes an appearance on the train.

The HLAUDEN heads south on the main (lower track) while the MDENLAU patiently waits on the siding (upper track). The HLAUDEN typically has a single unit DPU's on the rear of the train and today is no exception. A UP SD70ACe makes a rear appearance on the Front Range Sub.

At the north end of the siding of Broomfield, the Valmont coal train pulls as close to the switch as possible in order to clear Nickel Street...which it did by a car length or two. In the distance, the HLAUDEN had to tie its train down at MP 16 because its crew died!

There is a lot of junk to be found in this picture! And not just in the gondolas either. Now, I have nothing against BNSF...I have always appreciated that they try to match the colors of the unit they are patching when they apply a patch. But lately, they have been "scratching off" the BN herald from the nose of the SD70MACs. The nose of the unit looks was to plain now.

The lighting could have been better for this shot, but the clouds did come out looking extremely dramatic...I really like this shot because it depicts the three-way meet that took place. The HLAUDEN is about to leave the siding (to the right). The Longmont Turn is following the train into the siding with a Box 3 on its warrant. Meanwhile, the HDENLAU holds the main, waiting for the Longmont Turn to clear to it can continue north.

The southbound HLAUDEN has cleared up in the siding at Broomfield to wait for its counterpart - the HDENLAU - to come out of town. The dispatcher has informed the crew that they have a bit of wait, so the conductor has "gone for beans", meaning he will pick up a bit of lunch in town.
