It is 9:00am on Saturday morning and the eastbound California Zephyr is just getting into Denver. It is running just about 14 hours late at this point! Cold weather and mechanical problems were the primary causes. This is the reason for the pair of UP units, assisting the train on its journey east. On this day, the Zephyr is running with only seven Superliners instead of eight, as demand is often down some in the winter months. When running on time, the eastbound and westbound Zephyrs are about as far apart as they can be when they make their respective stops in Denver. However, on this morning, the eastbound Zephyr from the night before was running 14 hours late and the westbound zephyr was running 2 hours late. Then, the spare Zephyr on the stub track will be placed on the point of the eastbound Zephyr for the trip to Chicago. Meanwhile, the westbound Zephyr takes fuel during its station stop. Almost like the good old days in the 1950's when dozens of passengers trains came through daily. From left to right, a spare P42DC sits on a stub track. The eastbound Zephyr (running 14 hours late) sits on Track 1. The westbound Zephyr (running 2 hours late) sits on Track 2. This is the eastbound California Zephyr heading into Fort Morgan right around noon. Typically, the Zephyr hits this stretch of track between 9 and 10 o'clock at night, so catching it in daylight is very rare. UP runs a local out of North Platte, NE that goes to Sydney, NE, then Julesburg, CO and finally, Sterling. Here, the local sits with three tank cars of molasses. This spot had been bathed in sunlight until five minute before the train showed up (naturally). So, black and white seemed like the better choice for the shot.
