After a good run up the hill from Denver, it is time to sit for awhile! This westbound coal empty is in the hole at Rollins and will have to wait not only for the Ski Train, but for the eastbound Zephyr as well.

The westbound California Zephyrs picks up a little speeds as it leaves Rollins behind on an Advanced Approach signal. Three private cars bring up the rear of the train on this day. That last car was once owned and operated by Frisco.

Don't attempt to adjust your monitor! At the time of this shot, only 37 unpatched Espee units remained, and I was lucky enough to come across this SD40M-2, the fourth unit on the MNYRO-27. The rebuilt SD45 along with the SD40T-2 behind it are on their way to Ogden, UT where they will be placed in "long term storage".

A very heavy, slow-moving westbound MNYRO climbs its way into Rollins. This train got my attention for the day (and I let several other cool train go as a result) due to the fourth unit. It is one of the only unpatched Espee units left, an SD40M-2 (SP 8613).

Running a couple of hours late, the westbound California Zephyr comes around the corner and into beautiful downtown Rollins! With slightly cooler temperatures and slightly higher precipitation levels, there is a lot of green to be found up at altitude.

At the west end of Rollins, the MNYPH-06 has an approach signal. Westbounds are stacked up between Tolland and East Portal, slowing down additional westbounds. A coal load sits waiting for a fresh crew in the siding to the right.

A short MNYPH-06 - about 40 cars - heads west on the main at Rollins with a relatively new (less that two years old) ES44AC on the point for power. To the right, the CBRNKH-03 is tied down in the siding. The bosses in Omaha decided westbounds should rule the day and were fleeting west, causing eastbounds to get tied down at Rollins and Cliff.

Amtrak 5 is running about 30 minutes late as it passes the west end of Rollins. This is (and has been) a pretty typical consist for Amtrak for the past several years: Two P42s, a baggage car, three sleepers, a diner, a sightseer and three coaches.

The (not-quite-metropolis) town of Rollinsville enjoys a quiet Saturday morning, save for the MNYPV rumbling west on the mainline led by a Phase-III SD70M. Rollins has been confused with Rawlins, WY in the past. A Renzenberger driver from Cheyenne was supposed to take a relief crew to Rollins late one night. When the crew woke up, they were approaching Rawlins, WY on I-80!

UP's E-Units run east on the Moffat for only the second time ever on triple seven day (07-07-07). The valley of the Moffat Tunnel (and the Continental Divide) can be seen in the distance from this vantage point at Rollins.

After a few Operation Lifesaver Specials in the Colorado High Country and on the Western Slope, UP's E-Units head back east on the Moffat on a sunny summer morning. The train is the hole at Rollins to meet Maintenance of Way.

About a month ago now, UP discontinued the MNYRO (North Yard to Roper manifest) in favor of the MNYPV (North Yard to Provo manifest). Rio Grande's old Provo Yard is reportedly getting a lot of action now. The manifest will go to Provo, and then any cars headed for Roper will be forwarded on the MPVRO (Provo to Roper manifest). I was happy to find three SD70M's on the point...my personal favorite unit since the SD40(T)-2.

For those of you that are familiar with some of your constellations may recognize Orion looking down upon the signal at the west end of Rollins! A full moon offers some illumination on the side of the control box. The green signal is for an eastbound MPVNY which is on the approach to Tolland.

With the old signals for the days of the Rio Grande quickly disappearing, it seemed that a night shot was in order! Just a few minutes past midnight, the signal at the west end of Rollins gives a clear indication for a eastbound MPVNY which has just exited the east portal of the Moffat Tunnel.

It is very nice to see solid consists of EMD's running on the Moffat again. I'm obviously bias toward EMD's because that's all the Grande ever owned, but there's just something about the hum of the turbocharger! Here, three SD70M's lead the MRONY-21 toward the west switch of Rollins on a clear signal.
