After completing its work on the Rocky Spur, the West Local is now headed south back toward the main track. On the way back, the train will first have to run through the wye where Rocky Flats used to be located. This will allow the train to back down the Spur out onto the main and head east back to town.

It is early September and the sunflowers are in full bloom! The West Local has completed switching at TXI Aggregate and is now pulling up the 6% grade away from the plant.

I love the classic sound of EMD's 645 two stroke engine! So, when the West Local was getting ready to start pulling on the string of hoppers, I decided it was a good time to make a recording. I was not disappointed and I hope you're not either. Click on the "Hear It" link above to download the sounds associated with this shot of the train throttling up.

Peekaboo! UP 1482 (ex-SP 7112) peaks out from behind a hill of sand/dirt/aggregate as it prepares to start pulling south. Switching is complete at the TXI Aggregate plant and the brakeman is knocking off brakes.

The West Local switches out covered hoppers at the TXI Aggregate plant at the north end of the Rocky Flats Industrial Lead. The West Local typically had two geeps until 2003 or so when it went to a standard of three. There was a time when it ran with four! However, now that the Rocky Flats cleanup has pretty well completed, the local is back to just two geeps most of the time.

As the Rocky Local backs down the Rocky Spur toward the mainline, a telephoto shot from Highway 93 shows the power for the local against the Denver Skyline about 15 miles in the distance.

The power for the Rocky Local has run around the wye and is now backing to attach to the hopper returning to town. The train will shove down the spur back to the mainline and will then be in position to return to town.

Two things are being done by the Rocky Local in this shot. First off, the power is preparing to spot some covered hoppers on the tail leg of the wye. Once those have been spotted, the power will come back around the wye in the foreground, attach to the hoppers in the foreground and shove back down to the mainline.

Approaching the grade crossing at what used to be the west entrance to Rocky Flats, the Rocky Local is moving along at a cautious 10 MPH. A few of the hoppers that were to be dropped off at TXI Aggregate could not fit on the inbound track. Those hoppers will be spotted on the tail leg of the wye near the old Rocky Flat. They will be delivered to TXI at a later date.

The Rocky Local works on dropping off a string of covered hoppers on the inbound track at TXI Aggregate. The cut of hopper to the left are on the outbound track and will be taken by the local back to town.

Backing down the Rocky Spur toward TXI Aggregate (at the end of the line), the Rocky Local passes by "Old Time Lumber", a company located right off Highway 93.

About 3 miles away from the mainline on the Rocky Spur, a Saturday run of the Rocky Local is slowly backing down the spur. Note the conductor and brakeman holding on tightly to protected the reverse move and handle any misaligned switches.

This former GP40M-2 has suffered from yellow-door replacement! However, somebody has taken the time to remove the UP Shield from the nose and repaint "SP" on the scarlet red instead. UP 1510 is leading the Rocky Local as it shoves 30 cars back across CO-72 on the spur. Note the brakeman on the last car, hanging on for the trip back.

A trio of (patched) Espee GP40M-2s with fly letters have conquered the 8% grade away from the mainline along the Rocky Spur. The units are crossing CO-93 (which connects Boulder and Golden) as they head toward the former site of Rocky Flats.

There has been a ton of maintenance going on along the Moffat lately. Tie gangs, track gangs, switch gangs and signal gangs all out doing their thing. The Moffat has literally been taken out of service between Leyden and (at least) Cliff all week in between Amtrak's. This work train, with two SD70Ms for power, needed a place to tie up for the night, and the Rocky Spur worked as well as no house track was long enough to accomodate the train.
