Notice anything missing from this shot? Well, yeah, there isn't a train...but the green maintenance sheds that have been staple at Plainview as long as I can remember have apparently been removed!

At Plain, an eastbound coal load (on the main track) is meeting the westbound MNYRO (on the siding). The coal train will come to a brief stop at the east end in order for the manifest to pull all the way into the clear on the siding.

Approaching the grade crossing at Plain, the westbound MNYRO-12 is facing an eastbound coal load coming through Rainbow Cut. The manifest had been holding off the grade crossing so as not to block traffic until seeing the headlight of the eastbound in the distance.

Moffat Tunnel (UP) Ski Train
A classic view from Plainview that I first remember seeing in pictures my dad took by around 1980. The trees have grown taller and a lot of the train have changed, but Grande Gold with Flat Irons never gets old!

It can be a fun challenge to find places to shoot the Ski Train heading west in the morning light. I like this spot at Plainview. The cut on the east side of the tracks blocks the direct sunlight from hitting the lens. The morning sun does a nice job lighting up the side of the Ski Train as it is nearing the halfway point on the journey west.

BNSF's eastbound Provo to Denver manifest awaits in the siding at Plain for the morning summer Ski Train. The train, right around 6,000 feet long, won't fit in the siding without blocking the grade crossing. In this shot, the train was pulling to the east end (as the Ski Train was getting close). Looks like the conductor got my picture while I got his!

BNSF will regularly run DPUs on their manifests that run on the Moffat. To the best of my recollection, before this train, I hadn't ever seen DPUs setup on a UP manifest. However, the sand being hauled by the MNYPH here is very heavy, so a single DPU swing helper cut in about 2/3 of the way through the train probably makes good sense!

One of the irregular freights that the Moffat sees these days in the MNYPH, which runs from North Yard to Phippsburg on the Craig Branch. It is usually distinguishable from the MNYRO and/or MNYGJ as it typically runs a near-unit covered hopper train. These hoppers are primarily loaded with industrial sand and lime for some consignees in Craig, CO.

One of the last Vista Domes that still sees regular service, the California helps to bring up the rear of the Ski Train as it returns to town. Looks like some people have the privilege of riding in the California (as well as the Utah and Kansas) on this particular day.

The Ski Train is roughly half way home as it passes by the maintenance sheds and grade crossing at Plain. Note that, from this particular vantage point, you can clearly see Boulder in the distance, just above the number boards of SKTX 242.

Got rail? For those unfamiliar with CWR (Continuous Welded Rail), here it is! Most mainline rail these days comes in quarter-mile stretches. The rail is pre-assembled (i.e. pre-welded) before being transported to its final destination on the ties, under a train! This is how the rail is moved around. Each rail you see on this train is one long, continuous piece of rail.

It's always nice to see SD40-2s running on the Moffat. They may not be Tunnel Motors, but beggers can't be choosy! This westbound rail train - the WCYBDR-21 - takes the siding at Plain to meet the Ski Train. The rail train originated in Cheyenne and headed for Bond. Looks like UP might be planning to replace some ribbon rail in the Rockies!

I wasn't sure how I'd like this "artsy" shot taken near the grade crossing at Plain. Turns out I like it quit a bit, actually. My aperture was set at the highest f-stop possible to try to get the slowest shutter speed possible. I like the knuckles sitting on the ground near the green maintenance shed.

A westbound coal empty slowly pulls into the siding at Plain. Three units are all that are currently needed for this 6,000+ foot train headed for the mine at Energy on the Craig Branch.

At the west end of Plain, the MNYPV leaves the block and prepares to dive into Tunnel Two, the real start of the Tunnel District. The train was moving slowly at this point - not so much due to the grade, but because it was running on yellows following a BNSF manifest.
