That was certainly proven to be true on this afternoon as this eastbound got stopped at the grade crossing at Plain for over an hour due to maintenance. Once maintenance had cleared, there was a new issue...the crew didn't have enough time left on the clock to get down to Rocky. So, they had to do the crew change at Plain. The crew took nearly two hours to get to Plain, and the eastbound Zephyr got stopped for 45 minutes around Tunnel 4 as a result. A nice trio of elephant-style, flagged C44AC-CTE's made up the midtrain power on this 6,200 foot long MNYGJ as the train proceeds down the siding. At 6,530 feet, Plain is not a short siding. Yet the MNYGJ only cleared the east switch by about five cars once it was in the clear! The Zephyr was close enough to Plain that the dispatcher had the coal empty pull all the way into the siding, temporarily blocking the grade crossing. While the MNYRO usually carries some cars to be setout in Grand Junction, there are days when the MNYRO doesn't run. Combine that with a high number of cars headed for Grand Junction and the MNYGJ is often needed. It runs every Sunday to be sure in place of the MNYRO. I like this spot at Plainview. The cut on the east side of the tracks blocks the direct sunlight from hitting the lens. The morning sun does a nice job lighting up the side of the Ski Train as it is nearing the halfway point on the journey west. The train, right around 6,000 feet long, won't fit in the siding without blocking the grade crossing. In this shot, the train was pulling to the east end (as the Ski Train was getting close).
