It is a beautiful, sunny (albeit cold) afternoon in Byers Canyon. The 10º curves in the canyon make it possible to see the head end of the Zephyr from the Lounge Car.

This is a place I've wanted to shoot an eastbound from for quite some time. While I'm pleased with the outcome, I would now really like to shoot here in the morning when the fall colors are at their peak. This is about four miles west of Granby.

US-40 crosses over the tracks just east of Sulphur. This overpass is a great place to observe eastbounds as they charge up the 0.75% grade.

The MRONY is nearing the east end of Byers Canyon as the tracks get closer to the level of the Colorado River. The lead unit on the manifest, UP 6350, was SP 338 prior to the UP/SP merger.

With the sun now completely set, Byers Canyon makes for an interesting subject as a westbound coal empty winds its way through the ten-degree curves of on the canyon.

Union Pacific is in the process of adding a second main track between C&S Junction and CP DS007 (in Arvada). Consequently, UP has moved the high-wide detector previously found at MP 5.5 to MP 8.4, just west of Carr Street. It's the second time this particularly detector was moved. When UP built the Arvada siding, the high-wide was moved from MP 6.0 to MP 5.5.

Just west of Grattan, WY finds this coal load heading east on the single track mainline. The Valley Sub has a mix of single track with sidings and two main tracks to accommodate the traffic.

The entire Orin Sub runs under CTC, so there is no "right hand rule". The dispatcher can run trains on whichever track he or she sees fit. In this particular case, this load is heading east (geographic south) on Main 1 as an empty approaches on Main 3.

I thought there was going to be a race between this load and a UP load a bit earlier. However, a track inspector on Main 2 precluded that possibility. This load had to hold at East Bill to crossover from Main 2 to Main 1 after the UP load was far enough ahead.

Burlington Northern built the south end of the Orin Sub in the late 1970's, completing the connection with the north end in 1979. Chicago North Western was interested in helping finance the operation, but didn't have the money (Union Pacific would end up helping instead). Interesting now to see a (patched) CNW AC4400CW leading a westbound (geographic northbound) coal empty on Main 3 some 32 years later.

UP runs an annual Engineering Special that frequently seems to make its way over the Moffat! Such was the case here as the eastbound special, led by UP 6936, wraps its way through Byers Canyon.

Here we go! 2011 and you can still find a train with nothing but Warbonnets on it from time to time. Granted there are only two units, but I'll take it. A C44-9W and an SD75M lead the Denver, CO to Pueblo, CO manifest. Here the train enters the "triple track" section of the Joint Line in south Denver.
