One axiom on any railroad is "hurry up and wait". That was certainly proven to be true on this afternoon as this eastbound got stopped at the grade crossing at Plain for over an hour due to maintenance. Once maintenance had cleared, there was a new issue...the crew didn't have enough time left on the clock to get down to Rocky. So, they had to do the crew change at Plain. The crew took nearly two hours to get to Plain, and the eastbound Zephyr got stopped for 45 minutes around Tunnel 4 as a result.

Did you ever read the "Where's Waldo" books? Well, I suppose the title of this shot could be "Where's the Eastbound"! The westbound MNYGJ sits patiently in the siding at Plain awaiting an eastbound coal load. And, if you look closely, you'll see said eastbound emerging from Tunnel 4 in the distance near the right side of the shot.

The "Bloody Nose" Phase I Amtrak Heritage Unit leads the eastbound Zephyr down a snowy main track at Plain. Don't think that simply because it is May that the snow is over in Colorado!

The eastbound California Zephyr emerges from the fog running on a clear signal through Plainview. The coal empty in the background got in the clear just in time for the Zephyr.

This westbound coal empty is pulling into the siding at Plain to meet with a punctual California Zephyr. The Zephyr was close enough to Plain that the dispatcher had the coal empty pull all the way into the siding, temporarily blocking the grade crossing.

It is a beautiful, albeit slightly overcast, January morning as the MNYGJ heads west down the main at Plainview. It is becoming more and more common to find DPU's on the end of westbound UP manifests on the Moffat!

A westbound coal empty takes the siding at Plainview. The dispatcher instructed the train to stop short of the grade crossing so as not to block cars. Unfortunately, this shot shows where the train actually stopped, which is much further east that normal.

At Sedalia, there is a pretty massive fill that was built for both tracks to keep them on close to the same grade. This shot is looking up at the tail end DPU of a southbound coal load on Main 1. You can see Main 2 just barely visible on the far left side of the photo.

In a pre-dawn derailment on the Moffat, this was the loaded hopper that was the culprit. A single axle popped off in the Tunnel District and it was tied down here until it can be inspected and taken back to town.

A westbound BNSF manifest holds off the grade crossing at Plain while waiting for an eastbound coal load. That coal load would end up derailing a single car back up at Tunnel 12 though. This BNSF manifest would ultimately back down in between switches at Clay and wait for a relief crew.

BNSF's Provo to Denver trackage rights train makes it was east at Plain. The train is just coming through the appropriately named Rainbow Cut. Two Spring snow storms in the last week have left a lot of snow hanging around on the ground.

Twelve units make their way west (geographically north) at Plain. The tracks, from left to right, are the main, the siding and the house track. Even though it is Spring, don't let that fool you in Colorado! March is the snowiest month for the Centennial state.

At east Plain, this westbound light power move enters the siding as a snow storm starts to move in from over the Rockies. The power will have to hold for a few hours at the west end of Plain for some maintenance, the Zephyr and a coal load.
