Due to floods in the midwest, the Front Range Sub has seen a fair amount of rerouted traffic this summer. Such was the case on this Thursday afternoon as an empty BNSF northbound enters the siding at Broomfield. The train is meeting a southbound...but the train won't fit west of Nickel Street, so the crossing will have to be cut.

The morning light was fantastic in this Winter Wonderland scene. The only thing that may have made this better is if this was an eastbound instead of a westbound. Here, the MNYRO is in the siding with a red signal dead ahead. The train would sit here for nearly an hour waiting for a delayed California Zephyr.

These SD40T-2s were being used on locals in California until they were retired by UP. They are headed to Denver where they will be auctioned off in July. UP 2888 was born as DRGW 5357. You can tell it is a former Grande T-2 here by the shortened fuel tank. By comparison, see UP 2904 which was born as SP 8357.

At the west switch of Leyden, the MNYRO is backing into the clear in the siding to allow Amtrak to continue west. The MNYRO kept losing communication with its tail end DPU units, causing the train to go into emergency. These problems took so much time, that the crew on board will actually get relieved right here at Leyden! A new crew will bring out a new unit to put on the head end to resolve the communication issues.

After losing communication with these two DPU units, the MNYRO went into emergency west of Leyden. After an hour of checking, the crew is now backing the track down the mainline and into the siding at Leyden. The train is about to cross over Indiana Avenue.

The westbound California Zephyr got into Denver 2 hours and 42 minutes late due to bad weather in the midwest. Unfortunately, it only got 13 miles west of Union Station before betting stopped for another 90 minutes! The Zephyr is stopped here on the mainline at Leyden due to the MNYRO going into emergency ahead of it. The crew on the MNYRO worked to back the train into the siding at Leyden to clear up for Amtrak.

About five miles south of the Colorado-Oklahoma border, this BNSF coal load continues south toward Boise City, OK and points south in Texas. The train just crossed over the Cimarron River along US-287.

A sign of the massive work UP has been doing between Gore and Bond on the Moffat this summer. An eastbound ballast train - the second of the morning - heads east through Leyden. The train will continue to Cheyenne and will be reloaded with more ballast to be taken back up to the Colorado high country.

This is just about as ideal a Colorado morning as you can get! UP's MRONY has a clear signal as it approaches the west switch of Leyden.

A very long Beer Run heads east out of Golden in the late afternoon on a wonderful Saturday afternoon. The power on the Beer Run is rather bland right now, with a pair of C44-9Ws pulling the duty.

After a very brief stay in Grand Junction (less than eight hours), UP 1989 was put on the point of MRONY and sent east. This spot should be filled with morning light, but clouds in the eastern sky foiled the plans.
