You gotta love that in 2009, you can still get a Rio Grande lettered engine crossing over a Rio Grande lettered bridge! UP 1989 is a mid-train swing helper on an eastbound coal load crossing over Indiana Street.

The eastbound Ski Train rounds the curve just west of Leyden (and the bridge over Indiana Street). The train would get clear signals for the remainder of the journey in to town.

Okay, it is time to get a little bit artsy again. Not far from the west switch of Leyden, I setup for the eastbound Ski Train. Using the 300mm lens, I focused on the rail in the foreground while the Ski Train approached in the distance. This is the result...

A train full of tired skiers is only about 13 miles away from Union Station in Denver. I think this shot worked really well as a black and white photo.

At the west switch of Leyden, the Ski Train makes its way west about a half hour after sunrise. The train had to run through the siding as a coal load was waiting on the main track.

It is a beautiful Thursday morning in as the westbound California Zephyr leaves Leyden behind. The dark patch on the slope is the result of a fire started by the West Local about ten days earlier.

The Ski Train has been waiting patiently for this westbound coal empty to pull into the clear in the siding at Leyden. The switch at the east end is currently be thrown, and the Ski Train will be rolling east very soon!

Two BNSF helpers - an ES44AC and an AC4400CW - are pushing on the tail end of a westbound coal empty at Leyden. The train sat at Sable on the KP for three days due to two bad order cars. They were finally set out and the train made a dusk departure out of Denver.

Six units lead up this coal empty at the east switch of Leyden. The coal train was picked up from CSX and it looks as though CSX left two of its ES44ACs on the train for the ride to Energy Mine on the Craig Branch.

After meeting a pair of westbounds, this eastbound coal load is departing the siding at Leyden. Due to problems encountered in the past, it is rather rare to find a pair of SD9043MACs on the point of a coal train. However, I was pleased to catch such an occurrence on this day! Note the polls that UP has erected (along with a gate off to the left of the frame), preventing cars from driving along the Leyden access road.

BNSF has been running coal trains over the Moffat to Helper, UT (to interchange with Utah Railway) off and on for a few years now. One such coal empty with 76 cars is heading west out of Denver on a gloomy day in the Denver area. Here, the train is entering the siding at Leyden to meet an eastbound. Six SD70MACs take charge of the train on this day.

The westbound Ski Train has a clear signal at the east end of Leyden, and meets an eastbound manifest (which came from Phippsburg on the Craig Branch). The conductor from the manifest stands near his train to give the Ski Train a roll-by and ensure there are no obvious problems with the train.

On the first full day of summer, the eastbound Ski Train is on the move at Leyden, trying to make it back to Union Station on time. The Summer Ski Train has a much shorter day than the Winter Ski Train. It is passing by Leyden here around 5:00pm, compared to 6:00pm in the winter.

At the east switch of Leyden, the eastbound California Zephyr is on the roll with two special Amfleet cars on the end. The first car is AMTK 10001, named Beech Grove and is an Amtrak Business Car. The second car is AMTK 10002, named Corridor Clipper and is an Amtrak Track Geometry Car. This car tests the rails and is capable of accurately testing the rails at speeds up to 135 MPH (which it regularly does along the Northeast Corridor).

Running about 45 minutes late, the eastbound California Zephyr is picking up some speed as it enters the west side of the Denver-Metro area at Leyden. Looks like the lead unit, AMTK 177, has been tapped on the nose a time or two!
