Moffat Tunnel (UP) Ski Train
An artistic moment struck me when returning to Denver on the Ski Train. The ground is wet after recent rains which have now moved over Denver in the distance. Meanwhile, the Ski Train races down the main at Clay toward Big Ten Loop, the siding streaking by in the foreground.

Coal trains along this stretch of track are pretty common...BNSF power on a coal train here though, not nearly as much! Headed for the Wildcat mine on the Utah Railway (near Helper, UT), this coal empty sports a brand new SD70ACe on the point.

A wide angle view of Big Ten Curve as seen near the east switch at Clay. The head end power is visible on the left side of the shot, headed west back toward the rest of the train. The hoppers that serve as a wind break on Big Ten are on the other side of the hill with the lone tree on the top.

This eastbound coal load heads east out of Clay toward Big Ten Loop. After leaving Clay, the tracks turn east and offer a wonderful view of the Denver-Metro area and plains beyond.

A different perspective of the east switch at Clay as an eastbound coal train leaves the block on an approach diverging signal. After a crew change to Rocky, this coal train will continue east to Chiles, KY.

Just east of the east switch of Clay, this eastbound MRONY is entering the upper end of Big ten Curve. In a few minutes, the train will be behind me, heading toward Rocky.

The mountains right along the Front Range don't have a lot of deciduous trees that can offer good fall colors. However, there are a few hiding amongst the pine trees as seen here at the west switch of Clay. A coal empty with three units (no DPU) hustles west as the last of five westbounds to leave Denver before 11am!

Look west at the west end of Clay, you can see the gain in elevation between west Clay and east Plain. In this shot, the Ski Train is over a mile (trackwise) away, but has incurred a noticeable gain in elevation.

In the summer morning light, the Ski Train winds its way west on the mainline at Clay. From Highway 72, the tracks through Clay appear to be relatively straight. In reality, though, there are several curves as you head through the block.

The siding of Clay was originally named for the clay found in the area. The clay was a fire red color and, for awhile, the name of the siding was in fact Fireclay. The siding here at Clay has a permanent 12 MPH slow order on it and heavy loaded trains are not allowed through the siding. This is because the siding rests on the soft clay and the railroad doesn't want to risk a derailment.

Clay is definitely one of the more undershot sidings between Denver and the Moffat Tunnel. No doubt because Clay is a bit more inaccessible than the rest. A bit of a hike through Jefferson County Open Space can get you into the area though. The Ski Train is approaching the west end of the block here. Not the jointed rail on the siding.

It isn't very often that things get this green in Colorado. The green season typically lasts for a few weeks in May (maybe June), but things get brown pretty fast as summers tend to be dry. However, things were looking good on this day as BNSF's Denver to Provo (MDVPVJ) heads west through Clay.

Conditions on this April day were extremely interesting. There was a thick fog above 5700 feet and the temperature was only 25 degrees. Snow from the night before had frozen onto the trees and the plants, as seen near the west switch of Clay. UP 7114 leads a coal empty west at 15 MPH.

UP 5588, a C44AC-CTE, brings up the back of a coal empty coming over the west switch of Clay. White was the theme of the day as there was fresh snow on the ground and thick fog in the air.

I thought the American Flag looked good through the frost-covered trees near the west switch of Clay. This is the third unit on a westbound coal empty trying to negotiate with the fog!
